Beginning in Sydney with…

the Harbour Bridge, and…

…the Sydney Opera House.

Visitors to Federation Square are also welcomed to

the Home of Australian Art, The National Gallery of Victoria.

At the time of its construction it caused quite a bit of controversy.

Now Apple wants to build a store on Federation Square

behind (I think) thee National Gallery.

This is not receiving public support

due to the original design of the store

and the fact that it is at Federation Square.

Prior to Melbourne hosting the 2006 March

Commonwealth Games, Spencer Street Station,

our first rail port of call when visiting Melbourne,

was renovated and had its name changed to

Southern Cross Station‘.

I didn’t like the changes at the time.

Now however, totally different.

We can travel to Southern Cross Station,

have a light meal and shop all

under the Southern Cross roof.

Now camera gear is the only thing which will take me

a few blocks in to the Central Business District.

Decided to focus on Sydney this week.

Two images of…

…the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

And…

…two  images of the Sydney Opera House…

…taken from the Bridge.

Probably safe to say that water is the only

non man-made item in these shots.

Some random beautiful and bigs…

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

Big and beautiful, although

in the process of telling us to move on.

Finally, the Sydney Opera House.

Cee’s Compose Yourself Challenge

Week 9

Rule of Thirds  Introduction.

I have been painting some verandah posts

during the past couple of week

and today realised that I have missed

a few weeks of this challenge.
Sydney_0065This is one of the early shots taken on our

walk across Sydney Harbour Bridge.

While the Bridge is in the left third and

the tower (or whatever) solely in the right third,

I don’t like this shot from a photographic point of view.

Sydney_0065b

I’m sure experts with Photoshop would pick up the rough editing

I have done…however, I think this version is more pleasing to the eye.

There was lack of balance in the first short even though each third,

except the centre column, contained something.

My eye runs along the concrete (handrail), to the pylon

and then is drawn to the buildings on the other side.

Sydney_0195The left and top third intersect in the hole in the pylon.

While not a true thirds shot I think it works

because it is more balanced.

The left third contains mostly trees and bridge pylons

and half the right third is filled with the modern building

which is also reflecting the left side of the photo.

Again the bridge acts as a leading line (I think) drawing

the viewer’s eye to the other side of the Harbour

and away from the messy bottom third.

sydney_0075Again the right and top third intersect low down

on the major sail of the Opera House,

leaving the wake of the ferries to add

some interest in the middle third.

moon_0004To my eye, even though I have cropped this photo

there is still too much empty space

moon_0004aCropping, only seeing a portion of the moon,

adds more interest although

perhaps not a true thirds photo

Some more of Sydney.

commence our Bridge crossing.

The Sydney Opera House…

visible from every vantage point…

and not just the water.
