Jo’s Monday Walk17-Wk02

Brugge-4, Belgium

 Last week in Brugge.

brugge_maarket-square_0178
One of the last photographs in Market Square were these horses,

carts and drivers catering for tourists wanting

a gentle ride around Brugge.

brugge_0278

After we walked back to our hotel and freshened up

we returned for a Welcome Dinner which

provided opportunities for some twilight photography.

brugge_belfort-tower_0275

Belfort Tower in Brugge.

brugge_het-zand-fountain_0280The Het Zand fountain was one of the most

memorable sights of our trip, in my opinion.

brugge_het-zand-fountain_0282

Maybe it was that I had not seen a fountain…

brugge_het-zand-fountain_0301

illuminated like this before.

brugges-fountain_0299

Or maybe it was just the atmosphere and camaraderie

which was beginning to form between all travelers.

Jo’s Monday Walk17-Wk02

Brugge-3, Belgium

 Last week I showed this archway as seen from

the main Square in Brugge.

brugge_0159a

This view is from the canal side of the archway,

brugge_0158

as we walked back into Market Square.

brugge_0160

And if you happened to look up whilst in the arch

you will see this remarkable ceiling.

brugge-church_0163

Through the arch and to the left is St Basil’s Basilica.

brugge-church_0165

Upon entering St Basil’s I was immediately drawn

to a life-like wooden statue of Jesus…

brugge-church-statue_0165which depicts him bound prior to Crucifixion.

brugge-church_0167In a central nave a bronze statue of a pelican stands.

The pelican was/is a symbol for

Christ and the Eucharist.

brugge-church_0168

 My final photo is of Pietà.

In many Cathedral there are wardens/security staff

ensuring that visitors remain quiet.

No such staff were on duty during my visit

and there was no need to ask anyone to be quiet.

It is/was a very sombre atmosphere in the

Holy Blood Chapel of St Basil’s.

My source of information about some of these images is:
http://www.jeffangiegoh.com/?p=2852

brugge-church_0166

I cannot recall if flash photography was allowed

in the Holy Blood Chapel.

My photos were taken using slow (1/30 sec) shutter speed,

brugge_candle_0169

I guess like many locals and tourists

I light a candle before leaving.

I know I said last week that this would be

my last post of Brugge walk.

I will try, again, to make next week’s my last Brugge post.

to our first view of canals.

Canals were not expected until we reached Venice…

dsc_0149a

so quite a surprise to see them in Brugge.

Crossing over the canal we came upon the market…

and its many vendors.

And we still have more to come.

I just loved Brugge.

Jo’s Monday Walk16-09

Brugge, Belgium

Our first night on the European continent was spent

in Brugge, at the NH Hotel.

brugges_0102a

After a mid afternoon check in we walked into Market Square.

brugges_0111NH Hotel is only a few metres from Het Zand, which is…

brugges_0110

also bordered by the UNESCO building in Brugge.

brugges_0116

In the middle of Het Zand is…

brugges_0117

 a beautiful fountain, of which I have already posted

some night shots and will re-post next week.

brugges_0129b

We walked along Zuidzandstraat which was our first taste

of European crowds…locals and tourists

all blending in harmony.

brugges_0132

After a lazy ten or fifteen minute walk

we reached Market Square.

I will complete my Brugge walk next week.

In the meantime I wish all readers

 a Safe, Prosperous and

Happy New Year.

Floral Friday Challenge.

From last Friday, November 25, 2016.

 Some window gardens from Brugge, Belgium.

A drive by shot.

Red does not register well with my eyes,

however I think it will with most others.

Brugge

Sights from Brugge Town Square/Market place.

brugge-harp_0171 I thought this young lady was setting up for some busking.

However, the gentleman talking to her soon escorted

some tourists in her direction.

Five minutes later she was gone.

Looking for tourist fares.

And our first look at a popular mode of transport,

particularly in Belgium and The Netherlands.

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge-Entrances-and-Doors

~~~
My contribution for this week’s
Entrances and Doors
My interpretation for this week’s challenge…
calais_0074We entered Europe via the Port of Calais.
brugges_0111Soon after we were in our
first European city…Brugge in Belgium.
We had to walk into the Town Square
via Het Zand square and its fountain.
More about that later.
Het Zand from Google…Please correct me if I am wrong.
~~~~~

brugges_0129b

A short walk down this street and we were in

the Town Square…busy, full of tourists.

brugges_0156

Here I began to take some shots which…

brugges-door_0146

I thought would end up in

a photo challenge one day.

brugges_0159

I was actually returning through this archway

which served as both exit and entrance

to the main square.

brugges-fountain_0299

After our welcome dinner we had to return via

the Het Zand Fountain near our hotel.

brugges-fountain_0291

I could have remained much longer

than I did taking these shots.

It was unfortunate that we did not stay

anywhere near a fountain for night shots

for the rest of our trip.

However, the twenty or so shots I have

will always be some of my favourites

and will always be remembered as

the end of our first day on the European Continent.
