memorial

a statement of facts
*****

On August 5th, 1914 this group of men fired

the first allied shot of World War I

At 1245 hours, they were ordered

to stop the German freighter the Pfalz

from leaving Port Phillip Bay.

This was only a few hours after War

had been declared in England.

On August 5th, 2014 a memorial service

was held at Point Nepean National Park

to commemorate the event which took

place there 100 hundred years earlier.

My grandfather was part of the gun crew

that fired the first shot of World War I.

and all descendants were invited to attend.

~~~~~~~
~~~~~

oak

a large tree which bears acorns and typically has lobed deciduous leaves.
Oaks are dominant in many north temperate forests and are
an important source of durable timber used in building,
furniture, and (formerly) ships.
*****

One of the Oak/Acorn trees in my hometown.

These trees seemed huge to 5-year-old Woolly,

65 years later they appear to have shrunk.

I guess it’s all to do with their

slow growth rate.

~~~~~
museum
a building in which objects of historical, scientific, artistic,
or cultural interest are stored and exhibited.
*****
The word ‘museum’ conjures up memories of
my visit to the Steiglitz Court House museum.
No longer are the naughty put on display
and punished for their crimes.
Today, all that is on display
are memories of yesteryear.
All trinkets and tools have been superseded
by their modern cousins…
…even this wooden water mains has been well
and truly surpassed by more
modern material.
