One-Four-Challenge

My final submission for January contains both the

Urn and Garden shots taken using

the same effects modes in my camera.

No other editing has been done to any of the photos.

My favourite is Week 3…I think a lot of fun could be had using that effect.

The draw back with all these effects is that this is what they are.

If that makes sense.

The same photos taken, no effects, could be edited into (nearly)

any of these shots  while retaining the original.

I guess the plus is that you can use the effect and have a

different starting point for your editing.

Until I can use these effects while I’m asleep I think they will remain in

the novelty basket to be used after ‘serious’ shots have been taken.

night-vision

The instruction book states that

Night Vision uses extreme high  ISO settings

(maximum Hi 4  or ISO 102400)

and produces monochrome images.

Autofocus is available only in Live View/movie shooting,

and not always then, so manual focus may be required.

I think it is a great way to obtain a good Black and White image.

I am late with last week’s post.  However, better late than never.  I have still kept the urn as my first photo as it was the one I commence the month with.  I did managed to take some garden shots using the same effects and have included the relevant shot in each of Week  1 and Week 2

During the Christmas break I purchased and began to

READ…yes, read

the instruction book for my camera.

Marvellous what instruction books contain!

I discovered by pushing a button or two I could

severely affect the look of my photo…

no computer software required.

Wow!

I decided our Christmas tree would make the ideal subject.

I turned my back one day and the next thing I knew it was

back in its box packed away until December.

So this urn is going to be this month’s subject.

Scroll down further to see a

garden shot in colour sketch

colour sketch

This shot is in ‘Colour Sketch’ Mode.

The instruction book states that

Colour Sketch turns a photo into

something resembling a coloured pencil drawing.

I think this effect in the garden shot, below,

is the best of all the effects I have tried

to date and is better when there is

some colour in the subject.

LO

This shot is in ‘Lo Key’ Mode.

The instruction book states that

Lo Key creates a deep, low-toned image.

Again it is unclear if  this mode does anything

more than underexposing an image.

I have tried these effects on other subjects with better results.

Hi

All these photos are taken with a

Nikon D7100 shooting in Effects Mode and

letting the camera do the work.  This shot is in ‘Hi Key’ Mode.

The instruction book states that

images produced in this  mode are filled with light tones,

usually no black or deep tones at all.

Practically it is not clear if this mode does anything

more than overexpose an image.

Although the urn is silver there are some

deeper shadows, blacks, whatever, than appear in this image.

I’ve just checked! 🙂

As stated it does appear to over expose an image,

although my reason for checking was simply that

I thought the image was nearly identical to the real deal.

So Nikon software is going to be software of choice for this month.

This week I have applied Picasa’s

Duo Tone with brightness set at about 75%

on the original photo.

4_duo-tone75bright_1810

As previously stated, this is an excuse to try new things,

experiment, if you will, with Picasa.

I think this is ‘different’ but it is not my favourite.

which was cropped from this one below…

For the last image I have added some fill light

to make the objects clearly visible.

These photos were taken with Cee’s glass, or light challenge in mind.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, I did not have the

F Stop, ISO or Shutter speed set correctly and

the photos were much darker than expected.

My guess would be a slower shutter would have helped.

Still…there was a silver lining…

In keeping with Robin’s suggestion …

all feedback or comments are welcome.

While this has more colour, I think

last week’s image is still my favourite
