Book Review-Liar-Liar

Liar Liar

and

Candice Fox

*****

Co-authored by Candice Fox, James Patterson’s Liar, Liar, features Detective Harriet Blue who is bent on avenging the death of her brother, Sam.  In Blue’s mind the death of serial killer and nemesis Regan Banks was the only way to avenge Sam’s death.  She chases, or rather follows Banks’ instructions as he directs her movements around Sydney, prior to a rather uninspiring finale.  With all murder mysteries there are the usual expected and unexpected twists in Liar Liar

As with Fifty, Fifty, narrator, Federay Holmes, did not in my opinion, contribute to a positive audio experience with her Liar Liar narration.  All her character voices sounded tired and disinterested in their part of the investigation.  Not only disinterested but all had very similar voices and it was difficult to keep track of who was actually talking and whether they were angry or happy.

As you can guess Federay Holmes is not my favourite narrator, which is at odds with my wife who thinks she has a great voice for these books.

Book Review-Gone-by-Midnight

Gone by Midnight

(Crimson Lake #3)

by

Candice Fox

Gone by Midnight, the third in the Crimson Lake series by Candice Fox commences with four noisy pre-teen boys left alone in a hotel  room while their parents dine together.

On the second night four are again left in the room but only three are there at midnight, when parents return.  The hotel is searched and searched again.  All to no avail.  CCTV footage shows no sign of the boy, or boys, leaving the hotel.  Accused, but never convicted, ex-cop Ted Conkaffey is called into to help by the missing boy’s mother.

While the boy’s disappearance is being investigated Ted is supposed to be entertaining his daughter who is visiting for the first time since he was wrongfully accused of assaulting a thirteen year old Claire Bingley.

There are quite a few subplots in Gone by Midnight and I did not pick the ending.  Any more information and the spoiler alert banner will need to be raised.

Book Review-Redemption-Point

Redemption Point

(Crimson Lake #2)

by

Candice Fox

Redemption Point is the second of the Crimson Lake series, by Candice Fox.  Former Detective, Ted (accused of assaulting a thirteen year old girl) and Amanda, Cairns resident and convicted murderer (and now private investigator) joined forces in book one of the series, to solve vases in Cairns where Ted had fled to after his charges were put on hold..

Along with local murders and trying to clear his name (for the alleged assault in Sydney) Ted is again kept busy during this fast paced book.  The introduction of paedophile, Kevin is almost too disturbing for words.

Again, narrator Lani Tupu is an excellent choice of narrator.  As mentioned in my Crimson Lake review his vocal range captures everyone to perfection especially the voice of the paedophile.  Just plain creepy!

Book Review-Crimson-Lake

Crimson Lake

by

Candice Fox

Crimson Lake, by Candice Fox sees a then teenage girl convicted of murdering another teenage girl and an ex-cop accused of abducting and assaulting another teenage girl join forces in an interesting murder mystery set in Australia’s Far North Queensland’s city of Cairns.   Although a convicted murderer Amanda is a licensed private investigator who takes ex-cop, Ted under her wing while they investigate local deaths.

Because Ted has been accused of abduction and assault (no conviction) of a teenage girl he draws a fair amount of attention from both do-gooders and two ageing cops who have not been promoted during their years of service.  Ted wonders why the beat cops have not been promoted?

Amanda notices inconsistencies with Ted’s case and quietly looks into that, with fresh eyes.  Together they try and solve a local disappearance which may have been murder or accident.

Narrator Lani Tupu does a good job of narrating Crimson Lake.  His vocal range captures everyone from hot headed, disrespectful teenagers and Ted’s gravelly cadence, to the oozing slime generated by the aforementioned cops.

I thought Crimson Lake not quite a four star audio book.  However, a half star for the narrator’s contribution and it scrambles into the four star category.

I have rated

Crimson Lake

Three and a half for the story

and half a star for

the narrator’s  contribution.
