Geelong has several wetlands/sanctuaries within,
or only a few kilometres drive from,
the Central Business District.
I have only visited the Serendip Sanctuary
two or three times mainly because
it is out of my way to reach.
Serendip does appear to have
more wildlife that are happy…
…to sit and and smile for the camera.
This Crimson Rosella Parrot and
the Boobook/Mopoke Owl (previous image)
are but two of the feathered friends
to be found.
There are 71 different species of Macropods in Australia.
In 2011 the estimated population within
commercial harvesting areas was 34,303,677.
To se any species of kangaroo sit
this quietly is quite a novelty.
Lacking in variety, but convenient to reach
is Balyang Sanctuary which is only
a five minute drive from where MGW grew up.
Balyang is populated by bird life only.
Noisy cockatoos, parrots and seagulls…
…along with a few sleepy pelicans comprise
the bulk of the population.
I think of Balyang as a sanctuary also.
There is a small shopping centre behind me
and Geelong City in the fog ahead.
