My contribution for

‘Captivate Me’

During the Christmas break I purchased and began to

READ…yes, read

the instruction book for my camera.

Marvellous what instruction books contain!

I discovered by pushing a button or two I could

severely affect the look of my photo…

no computer software required.

I decided our Christmas tree would make the ideal subject.

I turned my back one day and the next thing I knew it was

back in its box packed away until December.

So this urn is going to be this month’s subject.

All these photos are taken with a

Nikon D7100 shooting in Effects Mode and

letting the camera do the work.  This shot is in ‘Hi Key’ Mode.

The instruction book states that

images produced in this  mode are filled with light tones,

usually no black or deep tones at all.

Practically it is not clear if this mode does anything

more than overexpose an image.

Although the urn is silver there are some

deeper shadows, blacks, whatever, than appear in this image.

I’ve just checked! 🙂

As stated it does appear to over expose an image,

although my reason for checking was simply that

I thought the image was nearly identical to the real deal.

So Nikon software is going to be software of choice for this month.

Technical Stuff

Apart from focal length, all the technical stuff is pre-set by the camera:

  • Camera: Nikon D7100
  • Lens: AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-105
  • Focal Length: 70 mm
  • Exposure time: 1/30
  • F Stop: 5.3
  • ISO: 1100

 Hope you enjoy!

  1. A nice solid textural subject, good choice. Its a very tight crop but I guess there were things around it you didn’t want to include? Like the powercord plugged in behind it LOL

  2. “If all else fails, read the instructions.”
This was a funny comment thrown around in my house, when we were kids and even sometimes now.
A fun post Woolly and Im looking forward to seeing how you go about things this month too.
The urn is interesting – great patterns to play with. Have fun!! 😃
    Happy New Year!

  3. This one made me smile–at the photo not taken. W are leaving our tree up until our son comes home at the end of the month, and our fingers are crossed in hope that it will last that long! The urn made an interesting subject too.
