On Friday night Geelong’s Floating Christmas Tree was launched…literally.
Geelong’s Mayor, Darren Lyons, was the driving force
behind the idea of a Floating Christmas Tree for Geelong
after seeing a similar tree off the coast of Rio De Janeiro.
Yesterday, Saturday, we decided to have a look at our floating Christmas tree.
It looked interesting in daylight…guarded by the Bollards…
and breath-taking by night.
Thousands of visitors crammed the foreshore
enjoying the attraction.
We were lucky to find a park close by to capture this shot.
Although its 25 metre height cannot be compared with Rio’s 82 metre tree,
I believe this may be the first Floating Christmas Tree in Australia.
Mayor, Darren Lyons and #EventsGeelong are to be congratulated for being
first to erect such a tourist attraction in Australia.
Money well spent, I say.
We waited for twenty to thirty minutes to see
all the colours and lighting effects
These two last shots were taken 300-400 metres from the tree
with a hand held Nikon D90 loaded with a
Nikkor 70-300mm zoom lens at full stretch.
I cropped the ‘red’ shot to create an illusion of being closer.

First I had to look up what a “bollard” was … then I was even more impressed with the creative bollards in your photo.
This tree is spectacular – I especially liked your photo when it was lit up green.
I agree with Mama Cormier that Toronto should follow your lead. Maybe now that we have a real mayor instead of the train wreck who was running our city the past 4 years, Toronto might do some cool things like this too.

Unfortunately not everyone thinks so. However, at a gathering, last night, we all agreed that we could knew who was Mayor of Geelong. Traffic was reported to be still chaotic at midnight last night. All those visitors, either local of out of town, would be contributing to the economy.

What a great idea. Maybe we could have one of these off the shore of Toronto in the break water area. All the condos along the lake would have something special to look at. It does look spectacular at night.

I think it would look spectacular off the coast of Toronto…after all Rio has its tree in a lagoon. Why not Lake Ontario? There used to be a fun/amusement park and golf ball shaped movie theatre on the edge of Lake Ontario, in 1976. It was a great place to visit and a floating Tree would add to it. That is, of course, if nearly 40 years later any of those attractions are still there! 🙂

Ontario Place is still there but there is talk of removing it and replacing it with something else. I can’t imagine what it might be but the casino idea has pretty much been shut down.

As soon as I read Ontario Place, it was an…”ah! Yes! I remember it well” moment. Progress and change. Without it we would not behaving this conversation. Time for a Sunday kip, to try and make up for only five hours last night.

Sorry but I’m not familiar with the term kip. Does it mean nap? I’m assuming it does when you’ve only had 5 hours of sleep. I’m working at trying to get to bed earlier these days and have aimed for 8 hours of sleep a night. So far I’m averaging 6hours and 47 minutes.
