We only visited Whakatane to fill in a day or so. However, as you said Ohope Beach and surrounds was gorgeous. Although there isn’t much about New Zealand not to like.

I spent three camping to entire length of NZ in 1980….loved every minute. This time with a wedding before us we did not want to be rushed. We visited Hobbiton (not in existence in 1980) and other places a bit off the beaten, typical, tourist track….at our own speed, time, not rushed.
