My contribution for this week’s challenge…
Earth
~~~~~
A variety of photos stretching from
Western Victoria’s, Volcanic plains
to a magnificent sight in South Africa.
I posted this photo of Mt Elephant recently.
Situated on Victoria’s Hamilton Highway
it is one of the many volcanic craters which formed
Western Victoria’s landscape
many centuries ago.
This is part of the family farm of which
I am the third generation owner.
In 2002, about twelve months after Dad passed away
and I was diagnosed with an enlarged heart
and told to modify my life style…no heavy lifting…
we decided to grow Blue Gums, a variety of eucalyptus tree.
Here the earth which we worked and harvested crops
has been ripped by a bulldozer and the
long grass is being burned
in preparation for tree planting.
In 2013 we were taken to the
Blyde River Canyon in South Africa…
to view what it has taken nature
thousands of year to create…
Bourke’s Luck Potholes
The colours and layers of stone/earth are clearly visible.
The canyon walls rise much higher than this bridge…
and being there in the dry season
one can only wonder at what it must
look like during the wet season.
And it’s a nice quick growing forest. This area has been harvested and within a couple of years the trees have coppiced and grown to around twenty feet, in some cases. Certainly can no longer see across the paddock again.
Wow. I didn’t realise gums grew that quickly.
The eucalyptus globulus (blue gums) do. From memory, I was told that there was three to four 7 metre lengths in the best trees with a bold up to 45 cm, over a twelve year period. With 1,000 trees per hectare, the growth pattern is unlikely to be the same as a specimen tree.
Amazing. That must almost rival pine plantations and considering the gum is a hardwood (I presume) it must be a much better bet for construction.
I would have thought the timber would have been useful, however, I have heard it’s not good fireplace wood and all of ours was chipped for pulp. And shipped to Japan..I suppose, as it was a Japanese ‘parent’ company driving the deal. Whatever one thinks of growing trees on farming land…there are plenty against it…it is a much better source of wood than logging old growth forests. I just adore huge old trees…they should not be felled so we can read magazines, build or use the land for other purposes. I have had my rant. 😊😊. Time for bed.
