My contribution for this week’s challenge…

Admiration

In February

The Spirit of ANZAC

exhibition was in Melbourne.

As I have regularly mentioned my Grandfather was

a Gunner on The Western Front after being deployed to Europe.

Was this the type of gun he was using?

Whichever side of the ‘fence’ soldiers were on…

they are people I admire.

For their courage….

in such appalling conditions.

For their ability to help a mate…

and for their ability to continue marching on.

However, these statistics we must never forget…

because these number only represent

about half the casualties of World War 1.

LEST WE FORGET

I was granted permission to photograph the exhibition

by a representative of the organiser.

Wordless Wednesday16_2704

This morning I had chat to that

yellow mongrel
at 0515, because she has the squeakiest,

intermittent bark I have ever heard from a dog.

By 0730 the were asleep again and

I was trying to stay awake!

Black and White Tuesday

A break from my usual Black and White today,

in favour of an ANZAC Day post.

Please forgive the quality of photos.

My phone does not take the best photos

Over twenty years ago Collingwood and Essendon

began a tradition of playing on ANZAC Day.

This tradition has developed to the extent

they even have a joint banner for the players

to run through before the game.

When both teams and umpires were the ground,

the pre-match solemnities began.

 As one, just over 85,000 fans rose to participate…

and join the players remembering all who…

 

have fought in two world Wars

and other conflicts…

and observe a minute of silence.

The New Zealand flag was raised and…

the NZ National Anthem performed by

a member of the NZ armed forces.

The followed the Australian National Anthem

and flag raising ceremony.

Then it was on with the game.

Collingwood won so I came home happy.

Happier still with the game played by

Texan debutant Mason Cox who kicked a goal

with his first kick in an AFL game and

went on to assist in several others.

Week 17, 2016

Last Friday I visited Balyang Sanctuary

for the first time this year.

I became quite excited when I spied this duckling

through my camera lens.

As I took my camera away from my eye I noticed two more.

However, they changed direction before I could snap them.

I thought they looked a bit odd.

Then I zoomed in for a close up.

It was April 22nd and not April 1st.

Better luck in the spring maybe.

Lest We Forget

A few weeks ago I happened to pass through

Corindhap township.

Corindhap Avenue of Honour

The Avenue of Honour caught my eye

and I have included it as my

2016 ANZAC Day tribute.

Opened in 1917, the young cypress trees planted to

mark, line and  commemorate World War 1,

have now been removed.

However, not they are not totally gone.

Several have been turned into sculptures,

recognising various aspects of war.

Corindhap now has a population of

around 100 people (Wikipedia)

a far cry from its peak of 5,000 in the

mid 1800s when gold was discovered nearby.
