Cee’s Compose Yourself Challenge
Week 6
Horizontal Lines.
This week’s my shots have been straightened using
Picasa (a free download from Google) and also Photoshop.
The biggest problem I discovered was that I would
straighten one line and another would look crooked…
not horizontal or vertical.
Melbourne skyline.
I believe the horizon is level, however the masts are all
over the place and their reflections exacerbate the issue.
This shot is frustrating.
What do I make level or vertical.
Initially, I made the left mast vertical,
however, after reading Cee’s post this morning and
having a look at this photo again…I decided to straighten the horizon (wharf /pier) and
now think it easier to accept masts that
are ‘off kilter’ rather than a wharf
which appear to run downhill.
for the first two which are both originals,
Among my horizons is one solitary ‘vertical’ line photo.
I have heard many people talk about the ocean being level…
I went to great lengths to level my horizon,
but I am sure there is a hollow in the middle of the photo.
I made certain the horizon is straight in this shot.
However, I think the foreground is distracting.
The fence and vines are being grown on a hillside
and my eyes are drawn down to the left of the photo
which is unnatural.
Nearing sundown over the Moorabool Valley earlier in this year.
I find Picasa easy to use for a ‘quick fix‘…
a bit of shadow, cropping, straightening,
and adding a bit of shadow.
For more precise editing, I now use Photoshop.
My first editing program was IrfanView (freebie)…
a basic program which I also still use.
However, as far as I know straightening horizons
is not possible in IrfvanView.

You have some interesting photos. I agree. Just keep the land straight. The reflections will look odd but I think having the land crooked would be worse. Lovely work though

Thank you Raewyn. I think I will follow your lead and watch the horizon in future.

Marvelous entry for this week Woolly. I like how you examined your photos and came up with how to straighten the horizon and why. It can get tricky working with horizontal and verticals. You made a wise choice in this one. 😀

Must confess that I have probably not taken much notice of horizons in the past…and I have felt a bit guilty of my comments about your photos a few weeks ago. I think I misinterpreted the challenge…. I think I am my worst critic, although I do have a few photos which I think are great but are given a tepid reception by those who see my pride and joy. And it seems to work in reverse, as well…a so, so photo receives more kudos than expected. All a matter of taste I guess… 🙂

i agree, sometimes it gets frustrating with alternating horizons and vertical lines, sometimes the lens places a small ‘fish eye’ effect on an image which can also distort making buildings (masts) appear crooked or leaning in. I have found Lightroom is very good for fixing these issues as well. Great pics

Must confess to ruminating about Lightroom of Photoshop Elements. Photoshop won because I could actually read the labels/text on the program interface. The Lightroom colours blended to much for me….and remember there is a touch of colour vision loss in my eyes.

I guess that is why there are so many programs out there, we each have different eyes and skill sets to work with, some prefer one to another, there is no right or wrong, just what works for ‘me’

Agreed…but cannot understand why they don’t have colour schemes which contrast better.

Which site did you use to download IrfanView? has it any advantages over Picasa?

More effects with Picasa I think. Will send email as I have written an epistle….and I did say I would email you about three months ago!!!
