South African Go Away Bird
Initially I thought the name was a joke.
However, I was assured that this is their name.
So named because of their alarm call
which, apppaently, sounds a bit like Go Away

Yes, the name does sound like a joke but once you hear the name it’s call is unmistakable.

I didn’t realize you saw it without hearing it

Fortunately or, unfortunately, birds were often pointed out to us. The sun was nearly always bright making them difficult to see. For example, I truly never saw the Crimson Roller until I arrived home and saw my images on my computer. So to the best of my knowledge, I cannot remember the hearing the Go-Away bird.

Lucky or unlucky. The guides we’ve had in reserves in Africa were tuned to mammals, and we had to do the spotting and identification of most birds by ourselves. The guides were very good with mammals.

I have to say our guides were simply tuned in. In my case, it was me or my eyes that were not adjuting to the light well enough to be able to see what my camera could.
