Our Guard Dog

~~~~~
Being a guard dog can take its toll on a hard-working kelpie.
ginger_0001Ginger was absolutely exhausted after performing her Sunday morning guard duties today…
and a rest in the warm, winter, morning sun seemed like a just reward…to her.
ginger_0012However, after lunch we saw a black and tan body making several quick laps of the house.
ginger_0013She had stolen Maggie’s bone.  No!  Borrowed it.
When she does that she drives us, and herself, insane
as she never knows where to stash it…hence the laps.
ginger_0014With camera in hand and using the window as a ‘filter’,
she was captured on her fourth and last lap.
And Maggie did retrieve her bone shortly after this photo was taken and
once again peace reigned supreme over our backyard.
Maggie vs Magpies
~~~~~

On Saturday we decided to try to feed some magpies which had been loitering around our backyard.

They did not take much encouraging to venture out of the trees and take some bread.

magpie_0031This morning Maggie realised that there was…
magpie_0033food on the trampoline.  While she sniffed around for a mere crumb…
magpie_0035she was being closely watched by magpie.

magpie_0054Her every move was scutinised until…
magpie_0056magpie decided, enough was enough, and…
magpie_0057put on a show which had our brave and fearless Maggie…
magpie_0058

back pedalling just a little.

magpie_0059Although startled…
magpie_0060Maggie forced her starving body to keep sniffing for food…
magpie_0078until she realised she was outnumbered.

Two against one was not fair and she left the birds to their food.

~~~~~
magpie_0086And the magpies laughed and laughed as Maggie slowly walked away and left them to their breakfast.
Surprisingly our Japanese Maples are showing signs of fresh growth.  Many of our deciduous trees are still bearing leaves which is quite unusual for this time of year.
~~~~~

maggie-soxie_0082The last two or three days has seen the weather turn rather fresh (cold).  Soxie is suffering from side effects of diabetes and seeking a warmer place to spend his time during cold weather.  Maggie is not as happy about the arrangement!

Maggie… Guilty as charged

~~~~~
pets_0036
After being found guilty by the world court overnight, Maggie was further insulted by
being fed on the chain as we had planned an early morning breakfast in Geelong.
That expression is common when she is thrown out of routine.
Note how Ginger is disassociating herself from the villain.
In previous posts I have referred to Ginger (my black and tan kelpie) as the digger in the garden.  We also refer to her as ‘the princess’ as she tends to prance around the yard and delicately eats her food.  Maggie, on the other hand is four times as heavy and gulps her food down with no finesse at all.
~~~~~

dirt_0008

It was, therefore, totally unexpected to open the curtains and see…

dirt_0007the mess in soil which was only laid soil twenty four hours earlier.  Also unexpected was that I caught the culprit red-handed.  Although not captured in a photograph I think the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming.

You be the judge!

ginger_0022Ginger looking clean and innocent, AND about twenty-five feet from the crime scene.

I am sure she is saying ‘Not me!’

~~~~~
Maggie_0020Which only leaves one other possible culprit.
Carry
~~~~~

maggie_0006This is not an unusual sight around our back door.

maggie_0009

 The ‘Tea Leaf” carrying her ill-gotten gains.

ginger_0001What was unusual was spotting this twerp in Maggie’s bed pinching the loot.

ginger_0002

Although this picture is a bit soft it shows the difficulty Ginger was having carrying the bone.

ginger_0003Attempt number two…

ginger_0004

was successful.

ginger_0005Gingerly, pardon the pun, it was lifted from the ground.

ginger_0006

Yes, I can carry this, she says to herself…
ginger_0007

and with a spring in her step…
ginger_0008

she is off out of sight to spend an hour or so gnawing the bone.

ginger_0009

Ginger is a constant source of amusement…not much else goes on around here 🙂  I have seen her carry a bone around the house three times trying to find a place to bury it.  The place is usually at the based of a prized plant.  AHHHHHHH!  She will then stand guard, showing Maggie exactly where it  is and at the same time warding her off, until….Ginger is distracted, where upon Maggie swoops in and steals back her bone.
