Nankeen Kestrel
Brown Hawk
…and again…I hope
Nankeen Kestrel
I have often seen this sight.
A hawk and a mud lark annoying said hawk.
However, only once have I ever seen a hawk
take down the mudlark.
Must have been a Sunday hangover.

Pingback: Bird Weekly Round-Up – Week #36 – Our Eyes Open
Great photos this week! Nice pics of the Kites in flight. Just FYI, the falcons are not in the same family as the hawks. As I stated in my post, they are more closely related to parrots. Doesn’t seem right, does it? 🙂

No it does not…I researched Kites until I was blue in the face trying to find a definitive answer. I guess I took one look at falcons and assumed….and we all know what happens when we assume something, don’t we? 🙂

ASSUME….Yes absolutely! Kites are in the same family but strangely enough the Falcons are not. I love learning new stuff! In my Sibley’s field guide book, the Falcons are at the end of the Hawks and Kites so it makes sense they would all be alike. I googled falcons and found out when I did the research on the Hawk families. 🙂

I will have a look for ‘Sibley’s’ around here next time I’m near an appropriate shopping centre.

I’m not sure if David Sibley has written field guides outside of the US but worth checking into. If not, I’m sure you have ornithologist in Australia who have. I don’t leave home without my book, even with all the aps I have on my phone. 🙂

You are welcome! 🙂 It is how I have learned to identify birds. I must have looked at it 50 times yesterday while out birding. 🙂
