Last summer was a bad summer

for fires in Australia.

However, there is rarely a summer when

we don’t have scenes like this

by fires somewhere in our dry land.

January 4th, 2013.

Loch Ard Gorge was the end of our

Great Ocean Road drive

with some Canadian friends.

At around 44/111 degrees C/F

the car park was literally

melting under our feet.

Manly Beach in early December/Summer.

Travel through rural areas in late summer

and you are more than likely to see

this scene repeated regularly.

Cropping stubble has been burned

to facilitate easier sewing to winter crops.

Strangely I thought this practise had died out

in favour of direct drilling and leaving

the stubble to help protect the soil

from wind or water erosion.

  1. We experienced the summer wildfires last year, Woolly, in Oz and in Canada. What terrible devastation. I’m so relieved that you had those heavy rains finally which put out the fires.

  2. We watched in horrid fascination as you battled last year’s wildfires Woolly. Who knew they’d be eclipsed by a worldwide pandemic just a few months later? Quite a year.

    • Yes! I think we all breathed a sigh of relief when rains quelled the fires. WE were to be in africa in june and it is on hold until 2021. However, Qantas is talking of no overseas flights until at least late 2021. At least airfares are good until late 2022. We may need that time. Not sure if is making news overseas or not, but the outbreak in Melbourne has been cause for all states to close their borders to Victorians. Some of those in lock down in Melbourne are upset because they cannot go shopping which makes me wonder if they took any notice of the first lockdown.

      • Yes, we did see that news Woolly. Sane people here wish the US would take more stringent measures but unfortunately it’s not happening…yet.

      • Good to hear there are people thinking like that Tina. All we are hearing is the number of deaths/cases per day, not to mention the battle
between your leader and his opponents and their respective stances on COVID-19

  3. Woolly, I can feel your pain with the heat. We’ve moved to Arizona and we’ll be baking all summer. 😦 There have also already been fires in the mountains not far away. Hopefully it won’t be a dreadful fire season. I really like that second shot.

Hope you and yours are healthy and doing well.
