I like dahlias very much and wish I could grow them. They come from Mexico and In the SEattle area you could leave the bulbs in the soil some winters.

I have never heard of Dahlias being lifted. Maybe that was our problem on the farm. We never lifted and bugs seemed to invade.

The dahlias have a blub and they have several diseases.

I think it was bugs and the fact that even with the benefit of century old trees to provide shelter they were severely knocked around by strong winds. We have little to no shelter now.

My husband’s favorite flower is dahlia, and we have tried growing them with no success here in Tennessee. I can see why so many people are fond of them. One reason is the marvelous symmetry and detail in blooms like the third one. Thanks for posting!

Like many plants they need the right climate. We tried while on the farm with little success…ours were too tall and were knocked around by wind, which, at times, is even worse where we are now.

We can say we’ve seen some grand specimens in San Francisco at the botanical gardens (forgot the name). They stood as tall as my chest and the blooms were exquisite!

So pretty. I love dahlia’s. Wish they were no annuals, I would have them everywhere.

I agree with you. We have to look for plants that will endure all types of weather including coastal climates before we consider trying to grow it in our garden. we have too much open space with little or no real shelter. Hot northerly winds and frosts have been the undoing of many of our tried and failed plants 🙂

This year I most purchased perennials with a few annuals for their unique color.

I hadn’t heard of them until a few weeks ago either. Found them on ebay…near Melbourne. Bred in tasmania in the early 1930s…no less. We purchased them for new garden beds.
