expanse

a wide continuous area of something.

If we had visited Botswana’s

Lekhubu Island

a little over 10,000 years ago…

…we would have been in the middle of

Lake Makgadikgadi,

which covered an area ranging

between 80,000 and 275,000 square kilometres

(or, 30,888 to 106,178 sq miles)

and was up to 30 metres deep.

In 2014, however, it was simply acre upon acre of salt

with the rocky out crop known as Lekhubu Island

the only visible destination.

For 360 degrees all we could see was nothing

and yet I would still recommend it as

an overnight stop just to experience

this vast expanse of solitude.

The sunset and sunrise were glorious.

The drive out was a little more interesting

with various trees and villages sighted…

…but still the expanse of that salt lake

was always lurking on the horizon.

Maggie could be resting quietly one second…

…and going in hot pursuit of the ‘enemy’

a split second later…

…and all the time she was, I am sure,

praying for a fence line to stop her silly,

but in her mind necessary, pursuit.
