As soon as I saw this week’s theme…
…I thought of the Waitomo Caves in New Zealand.
These photos come from Ruakuri Cave.
Photography is not permitted in the Glow Worm Cave.
None of the stalactites, stalagmite formations are the same
The average growth rate of
a stalagmite/stalactite is around 0.13 mm per year
(the fastest growth rate being 3 mm per year).
Therefore, at an average growth rate
these formations would increase
by approximately ONE centimetre
(half an inch) every century.
And while many appear to be similar…
…they are all unique.
In Ruakuri Cave photography is permitted.
While the glow worms are nowhere as prolific
as in the Glow Worm Cave there were some.
As to be expected a hand held camera
could only partly record the light.
As soon as we spoke of a New Zealand
North Island road trip…
Waitomo was first stop on our list.

LOL for the caves. When we were there we went in the glow worm caves the minute all the light disappeared I had to turn around. My claustrophobia got me! But it’s a great example of unique!

That’s a pity. They are marvellous. Apologies for the delay replying…your message was in my spam folder. No idea why. Only looked because one of Amy’s comments was also found in spam. 😊

Have heard the same thing from others. Have reported it to WP but it still happens 😡

Yes. WP seem to have a mind of their own….removing the spell check button form the editor is my grumble. My typing not good, hands shake and often I miss an error only o pick it up after publishing. And I mean weeks after. Cannot understand why it is beneficial to remove something that has been in place forever.

I’ve been to caverns with stalagmites and stalactites formations. They are so impressive. I had no idea how slowly they grow each year. Very interesting! 🙂

Yes, I could grow a good beard in the time it takes them to grow 1 millimetre.
