Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Houses

Houses like this were very modern and plentiful in the fifties.  All returned soldiers who decided to take up farming ended up living in, and raising families of up to seven or eight children in these three bedroom establishments of approximately 14 squares (1 square is 10 feet by 10 feet), or 1400 square feet.

Children grew up, moved away (to city based occupations) as 400 – 500 acre farms became unviable.  Now, rural Victoria is scattered with empty soldier settlers homes like this one.

Closer to major urban areas we see the old and new merging. Unlike cities in many other countries, Australian cities are spreading out instead of up.  At least that is what we are constantly being told.
