Which Way Challenge-Week 6

Tower Hill

Tower Hill is a dormant volcano in Victoria’s Western District.  It has been claimed to be the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere, if not the world.

Tower Hill’s claim to fame is that it is a volcano within a volcano.  You can either just drive around the crater’s edge and admire the view, or you can drive down onto the island and explore the smaller craters within, have a picnic or take one or more of the several walks on the island. In my youth this island was bare of vegetation.

About 50 years ago an 1855 painting, of Tower Hill, by Eugene von Guerard surfaced.  Ever since there has been a move to restore Tower Hill to the way it is depicted in von Guerard’s painting.

I must confess that I was a little disappointed to see it in its present state as many of the views I remember are no long visible due to the re-vegetation.

A further surprise came when, while checking my facts on the Internet, I discovered that the people who commissioned the painting lived across the road from my grandparent’s home.

A now disused railway station…with two chimneys….

…was this one built before the builders had lunch at the hotel across the road?

…and this one after lunch?
